🌸 Time for Some TLC

Its that time again, time for some well needed cleaning! Spring is here and so are the many projects ideas. Let's keep your machine in stitching condition and make it easy to get started on your new project.

We had a long snowy winter, one full of late nights spent sewing. If your machine has been running for months, like mine, it is likely full of lint, threads and lots of glitter. Dust, fibers and oil can accumulate, after awhile causing jams and poor stitching.

  • Clean the Lint: Remove the needle plate and bobbin case to clean out lint and dust with a small brush. Never use compressed air, as it drives dust deeper into the machine.

  • Oiling: If your machine requires oil, apply it to the bobbin area and inner mechanisms as indicated in your manual.

  • Change the Needle: A dull needle can cause skipped stitches or damage your fabric. Start with a fresh needle for new projects.

🏠 Preparing for Storage: Protecting Your Investment

If your planning to be more active this summer, and if you are taking a break from sewing, storing your machine away, take steps to protect it from damage during its downtime.

  • Cover it Up: Always keep your machine covered when not in use to prevent dust from settling inside.

  • Prevent Tension Issues: Release the tension on your machine by setting it to a lower setting and removing the fabric from under the presser foot.

  • Remove the Bobbin: Take out the bobbin to prevent the thread from becoming brittle or the bobbin case from getting stuck.

🛠️ When to Call a Professional

While you can do basic maintenance yourself, a professional, annual, or bi-annual service is vital for cleaning internal parts you cannot reach.

  • Signs of Needed Service: Rattling sounds, slow bobbin winding, or failing tension.

  • Timing Issues: If the needle hits the bobbin case or the machine is stalling, it is time for a professional mechanic to realign it.

If your looking for some motivation to get going and cleaning your machines we have just put up a new schedule of events. Be sure to stop by in one of the Spa Day zoom meets. Members have full access to all of the upcoming events.

Following these simple steps often will make it so much easier to jump back into sewing when you are ready for your next project. I know I say it often, but I can't say it enough, maintenance matters. Anyways, I hope you find this quick post and remember to give your devoted machines some well needed love, even if you plan to keep sewing the next few months. A clean machine is a happy machine!

Happy Sewing,

Erin Gannon
