Electrical Safety

It's recently been brought to my attention that there are many people out there that are unaware of the possible hazards when it comes to using and owning a sewing machine. I cannot tell you the amount of client machines I've had come in with tiny cracks or chew marks or loose wiring and they had no idea. And so it brings me here today to bring to your awareness that possible safety concerns can come up with not only vintage sewing machines but modern machines as well.

Machines overheat, wires melt, they get pulled and banged and thrown around, and lets not forget some animals love to chew on them, including small puppies, cats, birds and even mice. And you may not even notice it. How often do you check your power cords for loose wires, small cracks, or chew marks?

Sewing machines, while wonderful tools for creativity, are still electrical appliances and, as such, come with inherent safety considerations. Neglecting electrical safety can lead to shocks, burns, or even fires. This isn't meant to scare you, but to empower you with knowledge to keep your crafting space safe and your machine humming happily for years to come.

One of the most common and easily overlooked dangers lurks in the **power cord**. Take a moment to inspect your machine's cord regularly. Look for:

* **Chewed Cords:** If you have pets (especially puppies or kittens!), they might find power cords irresistible chew toys. Even a seemingly small chew can expose wires, creating a direct pathway for electricity to reach you or ignite nearby materials.

* **Frayed or Exposed Wires:** Over time, cords can become frayed where they bend, near the plug, or where they enter the machine. Exposed wires are a serious shock and fire hazard.

* **Cracks or Discoloration:** Any signs of cracking in the insulation or discoloration (especially burn marks) indicate that the cord is compromised and needs immediate attention.

* **Loose Connections:** Wiggle the plug gently in the outlet and where the cord enters the machine. Any looseness or flickering indicates a potential issue.

**Beyond the cord, here are other electrical safety points to consider:**

* **Foot Pedal Vigilance:** The foot pedal also contains wiring. Check its cord for the same signs of wear and tear as the main power cord.

* **Water and Liquids:** Keep all liquids away from your sewing machine. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination.

* **Overloaded Outlets:** Avoid plugging your sewing machine into an overloaded extension cord or power strip. This can cause overheating and fire.

* **Unplug When Not in Use (or Servicing).

** Always unplug your machine when you're done sewing, or before performing any cleaning, oiling, or needle changes. This prevents accidental activation and reduces the risk of electrical hazards.

**Vintage Machine come with alot more risks than a used modern sewing machine. If you are interested in buying vintage machines then I must advice you not to plug it in until it's been fully inspected for safety. There are many things to check and service on machines that have been sitting for any number of years in unknown environments, but that's another story for another day.

* **Professional Servicing:** If you suspect an internal electrical issue (e.g., strange smells, smoke, unusual noises, intermittent power), do NOT attempt to fix it yourself. Take your machine to a qualified sewing machine technician. They have the expertise and tools to diagnose and repair electrical problems safely.

Your sewing machine is a valuable tool, and ensuring its electrical safety is paramount. A quick visual inspection of cords and plugs, along with mindful usage, can prevent accidents and ensure your creative endeavors remain a joyful and safe pursuit.

Stay safe,

happy Sewing!
